This README contains installation procedures, feature highlights and other information to get you started using CompuServe 3.0 on a Macintosh 68K or PowerPC. If you have already installed CompuServe 3.0, please skip Minimum Requirements and Installation Notes, and continue with the sections that follow.

Minimum Requirements (Macintosh 68K)
- Macintosh Operating System 7.0.1 or better
- 16-shade grayscale monitor (640x480 256-color or better monitor recommended)
- 11 Mb available RAM (16 installed Mb recommended)
- at least 30 Mb free hard disk space
- 68020 processor (68040 processor recommended)
- 9600 baud (or higher) connection rate
Minimum Requirements (Macintosh PowerPC)
- Macintosh Operating System 7.1.2 or better
- 16-shade grayscale monitor (640x480 256-color or better monitor recommended)
- 11 Mb available RAM (16 installed Mb recommended)
- at least 30 Mb free hard disk space

Installation Notes
To Install CompuServe 3.0
The Installer will automatically check your system specifications to see if your system can run CompuServe 3.0 for Macintosh. If your system is adequate, CompuServe 3.0 will be installed. If your system is not adequate to run CompuServe 3.0, MacCIM version 2.4.4 will be installed instead.
There are two installation options for CompuServe 3.0 for Macintosh, Easy Install and Custom Install. Please read both sections below carefully before choosing an installation method.
Easy Install - Choose this installation method if:
a.) You have never accessed the Internet or World Wide Web (WWW), or
b.) you have accessed the Internet or WWW but want to begin using CSi as your connection method.
Easy Install will install and configure the following components:
* CompuServe 3.0 Application - the files necessary to run CompuServe 3.0.
* CompuServe PPP Switcher - the CompuServe Point to Point Protocol (PPP) Switcher. The CompuServe PPP Switcher lets you toggle between CompuServe Internet settings and your previous Internet settings, if any are present.
* CompuServe PPP Configuration Files - the files necessary to access CSi, the Internet, and WWW.
Note: The installer will ask if you wish to "Configure" your computer to access the Internet through CSi. By choosing "Configure", your current Internet access settings (if any are present) will be saved and can be easily restored by using the CompuServe PPP Switcher application.
* Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.1 - The files necessary to run the Internet Explorer browser.
To use Easy Install with CompuServe 3.0:
1. Start the installation by double-clicking the CompuServe 3.0 icon on your desktop.
2. In the Welcome to CompuServe window, click Continue.
3. In the CompuServe 3.0 Installer window, click Install (Easy Install is the default option).
4. In the End User License Agreement for Internet Explorer window, click Accept.
5. Click Configure.
6. Click Continue.
7. Click Restart.
Custom Install - Choose this installation method if:
a.) You have already accessed the Internet or WWW through another connection method and you wish to continue to use that connection method, or
b.) you are a current member of CSi, using MacCIM 2.4.4 with PPP configured as your access method.
Custom Install will give you the option to install and configure the following components:
* CompuServe 3.0 Application - the files necessary to run CompuServe 3.0.
* CompuServe PPP Switcher - the CompuServe Point to Point Protocol (PPP) Switcher. The CompuServe PPP Switcher lets you toggle between CompuServe Internet settings and your previous Internet settings, if any are present.
* CompuServe PPP Configuration Files - the files necessary to access CSi, the Internet, and WWW.
Note: Do not install CompuServe PPP Configuration Files if you already have access to the Internet and WWW through another connection method and you wish to continue to use that connection method.
* Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.1 - The files necessary to run the Internet Explorer browser.
To use Custom Install with CompuServe 3.0:
1. Start the installation by double-clicking the CompuServe 3.0 Installer icon on your desktop.
2. In the CompuServe 3.0 Installer window, select Custom Install from the pulldown menu (default is Easy install).
3. Select the components you wish to install. You may also select the folder into which you want to install CompuServe 3.0.
4. Click Install.
5. If you selected to install Internet Explorer, the End User License Agreement will appear. Click Accept.
6. If prompted, click Continue.
7. If prompted, click Restart.
To Uninstall CompuServe 3.0
Removing CompuServe PPP files (applicable only if PPP Configuration Files were installed):
1. Open the CompuServe 3.0 folder.
2. Find and double-click the CompuServe PPP Switcher.
3. Click "Use previous Internet connection" and then quit the program. Note: you might be asked to restart the computer.
4. Open your Extensions folder(located within the System folder) and drag the CompuServe PPP file to the Trash.
5. Open your Control Panel (located within the system folder) and drag the CompuServe Dialer to the Trash.
Removing CompuServe 3.0:
1. Locate the CompuServe 3.0 folder and drag it to the Trash.
2. Do you use previous versions of MacCIM?
YES:
Open the CompuServe folder (located within the Preferences folder, within the
System folder) and drag the following files to the Trash:
- CompuServe 3.0 Settings
- CompuServe Decompression
- CompuServe PPP Switcher
- CompuServe Preferences
- ForumDatabase
- Resumable Downloads
- RPA Prefs
- RPAMacLib
- Terminal Cache
NO:
Drag the CompuServe folder (located within the Preferences folder, within the
System folder) to the Trash.
Connection Troubleshooting
Having trouble connecting with CompuServe 3.0? Please read these suggestions which might resolve the problem.
If your external modem is not dialing, check the following:
1. The modem is on.
2. All cables are firmly connected.
3. The phone jack connects to the correct plug on the modem.
4. In CompuServe 3.0, in Preferences, the correct port for your modem is chosen.
5. Also in Preferences, all needed connection information is entered.
6. No other programs that use the modem are running. This includes all fax software extensions in the Extensions folder.
7. Verify that you can get a dial tone. An extension may be off the hook.
If your modem dials but does not connect to CompuServe, check the following:
1. The correct modem speed is shown.
2. The correct network is chosen. This should be "CompuServe" unless you are required to use a different network.
3. In the Define Modem area, your model of modem is selected in the menu at the top. Should your modem not appear on the list, select "Hayes" at the top.
4. Try reducing the modem speed.
If your modem makes and holds a connection, but you still cannot connect:
1. Try steps 1,2,3, and 4 in the above section.
2. If you are connecting to the Internet through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) other than CompuServe, contact the ISP and ask if they are able to "resolve gateway.compuserve.com."
3. Were you able to connect to the Internet before installing CompuServe 3.0? If so, run the CompuServe PPP Switcher utility to restore your previous Internet settings.

We also offer complete, easy access to the Internet through our external web browser, Microsoft's Internet Explorer 2.1. You may also use any other external web browser of your choice.
Multi-Tasking
CompuServe 3.0 has multi-tasking capability, which saves you time by allowing you to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
Personalized, Customizable Features
Time-saving, organizational tools in CompuServe 3.0 allow you to track where you've been, schedule tasks, such as downloads, at convenient times, and change the order in which information is presented according to your personal preferences.

Help System
- Learn About Help: Main desktops have a Learn About side button, which you can click to find out how to accomplish your tasks using the desktop features. If you're a new member (or not a frequent user), Learn About Help is a good place to begin.
- Context-sensitive Help: If you need help understanding a feature or function you are using, press the Help key to display related Help information. Many windows in CompuServe 3.0 also include a Help button you can click to display information about that window and its components.
- Help Menu: To learn how to use the Help system, choose "How to Use Help" from the Help Menu. Choose "Contents" from the Help menu to view the Help system's table of contents.

Miscellaneous Information
Find Out About Updates
You can find information about the latest versions of CompuServe 3.0 in the CompuServe 3.0 Area (GO CSISOFT).
Known Limitations in This Version
* OpenTransport: If your computer uses OpenTransport, then OpenTransport version 1.1 or later is required. If you use the CompuServe Dialer (also known as the CompuServe PPP files) to connect to CSi or the Internet, you will need to re-install CompuServe 3.0 if you upgrade or re-install OpenTransport or any system software.
* It is possible for the dialer to remain connected when a connection to CompuServe fails. In the Connection area of the Preferences, there is a check box for "Hang up phone upon disconnect." If it is not marked, the PPP connection will remain after CS3 is disconnected; this would allow the connection to be used by another TCP/IP application such as the external browser. If the check box is marked, the dialer will disconnect when CS3 is disconnected. However, if the PPP connection succeeds but the CS3 connection fails, the dialer will remain connected. To disconnect the dialer, open the CompuServe Dialer from the Control Panel and disconnect manually by clicking the "Hangup" button.
* Some PCIbus model Power Macintosh systems might encounter a crash if the CompuServe Dialer is unable to establish a connection or the user "Stops" during a connection. If this problem exists on your system, you should be able to fix it by opening the TCP/IP Control Panel and changing the configure option from "Using BootP Server" to "Using PPP Server." This problem seems to occur more frequently on machines using Open Transport 1.1. An upgrade to Open Transport 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 (available on Apple's support information page at http://www/info.apple.com) will probably correct the problem.
* CompuServe 3.0 may fail to connect if you have more than one highlighted icon in your Mac TCP Control Panel. This may arise from the installation of other Internet software (such as FreePPP or MacPPP) on top of CompuServe. Do you have the CompuServe 3.0 installer? If so, run the Installer and perform an "Easy Install." If not, deselect the unwanted icon and restart.
* In Terminal Emulation, a crash can occur if you follow all of these steps:
1. You access a Forum via Terminal Emulation
2. You open a .GIF image from the Forum Library
3. You cancel before the image is fully read
* Currently, you cannot resume file download in Terminal Emulation.
* There is a reported crash bug which can arise when the user leaves a Forum while the Forum logo or the Forum notice is being retrieved.
* If you cannot connect because your modem cable cannot support hardware flow control, you will need to enter the software flow control string in the init string edit box. In addition, update your CompuServe 3 Settings so the variable "FlowControl=" is either 1 or 3. Entering 1 activates software flow control only, while entering 3 activates both software and hardware flow control.
About the Filing Cabinet
The Filing Cabinet in CompuServe 3.0 stores Mail messages, Forum messages, news articles (stories), or other types of text articles that you want to review or use later. Simply click the File It button in the message or article window, and then select or create the folder where you want to store it.
To access the Filing Cabinet, click the My Information side button (on the Home Desktop), and then click the Filing Cabinet top tab.
The Filing Cabinet in CompuServe 3.0 uses the same format as the Filing Cabinets in previous versions of CompuServe software. You will be prompted at run time to import your Filing Cabinet into CompuServe 3.0 or create a new Filing Cabinet
Configuring an External Web Browser
CompuServe 3.0 will install Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.1 if an Easy Install is selected or if IE 2.1 is selected from the Custom Install options. If you have an Internet browser installed you can configure CompuServe 3.0 to use that browser. Simply select Preferences option from the Edit pulldown menu. Press the General button and then select the 'Select Browser' button, locate and select your Internet Browser.
Bonus Files
CompuServe 3.0 comes with bonus software packages, including Adobe Acrobat and WorldsAway v. 1.2.
Note: If you DO NOT HAVE previous versions of MacCIM installed, WorldsAway 1.2 will configure a CompuServe 3 Settings file and can be installed prior to installing CS3. If you DO HAVE previous versions of MacCIM installed, WorldsAway 1.2 will configure the MacCIM CompuServe Settings file for use with MacCIM, but will NOT configure a CompuServe 3 settings file for use with CS3. In this instance, you will need to install WorldsAway 1.2 after installing CS3.
